NHAD Ch 38.2 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-38-2/ https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-38-2/#comments Sat, 05 Mar 2022 13:43:42 +0000 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/?p=9260   Translator: mii Editor(s): ASplashOfMusic, sleepchaser   “Al, you also…”   Because I’m too much of a coward, I cut myself off midway, too scared to ask.   I once again gather up what little courage I have in me and open my mouth to speak, but Alfred’s arms around me grow tighter. He presses his forehead and cheeks against my chest.   I can tell even just by looking at him that his arms and body are trembling violently.   “Back then, there was the same light…”   …Back then? Same light?   “…Back then? What—”   Before I can finish asking, someone claps their hands.   Since it’s so quiet that you can even hear people breathing, the clapping sound resonates very clearly in the air.   Out of reflex, I turn my head towards the source of the sound, which is at the center of the corridor on the second floor.   From the edge of my vision, I see other people also raise their faces, looking up in the same direction as I am.   I don’t understand what is happening. It’s like everything is resetting, making me unable to decide what I should do or how I should move.   You can say that everyone is going on autopilot… including me.   The dawn-colored knight claps once again. “Everyone, don’t move from your spot. After that, put your weapons down on the floor.”   As Schwede sweeps his gaze over the crowd, some of the knights immediately place their weapons down on the floor. Clanking sounds reverberate in the room.   Behind Schwede, a man with a white hat and a white robe also puts his priest’s staff on the floor, panic clear on his face. He’s probably… the archbishop who governs this branch.   Nevertheless, such an important figure still obeys Schwede’s order. Even if one doesn’t know his identity, anyone who witnessed such a scene will have guessed that he must be some bigshot.   With their faces containing a mixture of surprise and a little fear, the knights and warlocks all put down their weapons one after another too.   Schwede slowly folds his arms, narrows his eyes, and then exhales. “…Judging from everyone’s faces, it seems like you have all also seen the light just a while ago.”   Light.   As soon as Schwede says that, the surroundings start to grow noisy. Words pour out from everyone’s lips, as though the dam keeping their lips shut  has been broken.    Words of exclamation, surprise, fright, ecstasy, repentance, and joy.   Schwede frowns at all the noise and warns, “Everyone, be quiet. Keep in mind that we’re in a sacred place.”   Right at the next moment, the hall falls silent. Everyone who believes in the Fortuna religion here follows his words immediately and shuts their mouths.   When I see that, I once again realize the weight of his position as the Knight of the Sword. And also the danger we’re in.   Schwede peers at the quiet entrance again before sighing. “Listen, everyone. Calm down and listen to me now. The Goddess gave us an oracle just a short while ago.”   “Huh?”   Oracle…?   As I look up, Schwede shifts his gaze toward me. His eyebrows slightly droop, and with a troubled smile, he continues, “Together with that white light, the Goddess descended upon us and said to me, ‘Do as what the person I have sent wishes.’”   “The person she has sent…?”   “Yes, that’s right. That’s what she told me earlier… Lian-dono.” Schwede turns to me. “…The Goddess told me that person is the boy in silver. In this place, the only one bearing that color is… Lian-dono. Only you. The Goddess has ordered us to do as you… no, to do as the angel wishes.”   “!!!”   I already told him not to call me angel!   Sure enough, everyone around me turns their head toward me with a startled expression. Their faces are exactly the same as Marie’s when I first met her. Read this at perpetualdaydreams.com I know that he probably has some hidden motives for saying that in front of these guys—maybe to convince everyone—but I don’t want to admit it. However, Schwede raises his eyebrows and grins in humor. This bastard.   “That’s why, Angel. Let us obey your words. Can you please tell us what your wish is?”   “…My wish…”   —Ah.   …I see. So that’s it.   She told me that I can do as I wish. She’s simply repeating the words I told her back then.   At last… Does this mean she has been convinced and is now willing to give me her consent?   I look up, trying to see that place that is much higher and farther than the ceiling. That place where she’s at.   Amidst the remaining white fluffy feathers in the air, a couple drops of water fall and hit my cheek. It’s probably rain that accumulated somewhere. But for some reason, the water isn’t cold. Rather, it’s a little warm.   I turn and look into Schwede’s eyes. Then I open my mouth and say, “My wish is to stay in the village and watch over them with my own eyes until the end. Thank you for thinking about me and trying to save me, but… if you have to keep me away from the village just to ensure my safety… then don’t do anything. Please don’t do it. That is my wish.”   “…I see.” Schwede closes his eyes, heaves a long sigh, then opens his eyes again. “I understand… I thought you would say that. It’s really troubling that everything is just as I expected.”    Then Schwede faces the entrance. “Everyone, did you hear his words? He is the one who descended to this world upon receiving a sacred mission from the Goddess. From now on, ensure no one obstructs his actions. That is his wish and by extension the oracle given by the Goddess as well. Therefore, those who don’t follow the angel’s words also defy the Goddess… For those people, let it be known that I will behead them with my own sword. Also, it is forbidden to talk about what happened here. I’m sure you should have understood by now, but the fact that he is the angel is a secret. Do you all understand?”   Schwede narrows his eyes, shooting everyone a sharp glare.   As expected of the strongest man in the Fortuna church. He deserves the title “Knight of the Sword.”   His presence, intimidation, glare, and silent pressure are topnotch.   Everyone has a pale face as if frightened and bobs their head repeatedly. Affected by them, I also nod. It can’t be helped since he’s very scary right now.   Maybe that’s the real “Schwede Scherzer, Knight of the Sword.”   After that, Schwede claps his hands again. “That is all from me. If anyone is injured, get your wounds healed. Meanwhile, the others are to clean up this place. Once you’re done, return to your respective posts. Move now.”   After Schwede gives them instructions, everyone starts moving, their faces somewhat absent-minded.   In an instant, I lose all strength in my body. I feel like I’m about to sink to the floor any time soon, but I manage to endure it.   My migraine and stress-induced gastritis have come to attack me again, and they really hurt, but… the knight who’s also the spokesperson of the Patriarch is glaring at everyone to warn them not to touch or talk to me, probably because he’s taking care of me… I think everything will be okay. I want to think that.   Really. Please just leave me alone. I seriously beg you.   We are still looking for a translator for this novel! if you are interested, please click here to apply!   <PREV     TOC      NEXT>

NHAD CH 38.1 – Clouds, Sometimes Bringing Heavy Rain, Sometimes Thunder, And… Part III https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-38-1/ https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-38-1/#respond Sat, 05 Mar 2022 13:20:57 +0000 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/?p=9256   Translator: mii Editor(s): ASplashOfMusic, sleepchaser   The succeeding events all happen so suddenly.   My vision turns into a field of pure white.   I don’t know whether it lasted for a moment or a few minutes, but everything became white. I can’t see anything.   After that, my sight returns to normal, just as sudden as the previous phenomenon.   I don’t know what happened, but just before my sight returned, I heard a small trembling voice, saying, “I’m sorry…”   It’s the voice of a little girl who sounds like she’s about to cry any time soon.   And even when everything was previously still dyed with pure white, I saw several white feathers fluttering down from the sky in the midst of the vast whiteness.   That’s—   “…Jeez,” someone says with a sigh from above.   Turning my gaze to the source of that voice, I notice that the dawn-colored knight has placed one hand on his waist as he palms his forehead with his other hand. His eyes are also cast down for some reason, and he… groans with a conflicted expression on his face.   How rare. Actually, this might be the first time I’ve ever seen Schwede frown like that.   It’s clear that he’s thinking about something troubling, but I don’t know what’s going on. I look up and stare at him.   Slowly, the knight opens his eyes.   He still has a frown and looks like he’s in a bad mood. Despite this, he also has a complicated expression, like he’s feeling somewhat regretful. I can see some resignation mixed in too. I don’t know how to describe it.   Meanwhile, I start to hear soliloquy murmurs from all around us. It is then that I remember the situation we’re in, causing my body to twitch.   No good. Currently, we’re… almost at the center of the hall. And many people are surrounding us and trying to catch us.   I desperately work my mind into overdrive to come up with how I can break through this predicament until my brain’s one step away from heating up. I hurriedly shift my gaze to the entrance, wondering whether there’s some way to break past all the people.   “Huh…?”   Nobody’s looking at us.   The hallway is also in complete silence.   Puzzled, I look around again, noticing that most people are absentmindedly looking up at the ceiling, mouths open wide. It’s like their thoughts are not here but still in dreamland.   It’s so quiet that I can hear the sound of my breathing. No one is moving. Not even a twitch. I feel like I’m trapped in some illusion where time has stopped.   I don’t know how long my confusion with what’s going on with the people around me lasted. Maybe a few seconds or a few minutes. But after that, everyone starts to move again, as though they’ve just managed to recover from their state of shock. It is then that I finally understand that time hasn’t stopped.   Yet even after everyone starts to move again little by little, nobody looks like they’re going to come for us.   Some of them sit down as if they’ve lost their strength, shaking their heads and looking at the people nearby. They then look up at the ceiling as if they’re looking for something.   Some of them continue to stand still, a dreamy expression still on their faces.   There are also warlocks and knights who knelt on one knee and put their hands together, also looking up.   White feathers flutter around us from above.  Read this at perpetualdaydreams.com The pure white feathers look weightless, fluttering upward and side to side as if they’re dancing and then descending again.   Fluffy.   Suddenly, the hallways become brighter. A soft streak of light from above enters the room through the broken window on the wall.   From my limited view of the sky through the gap of the window, I can’t find any black clouds… All I can see is the blue sky peeking between the clouds, which becomes thin and torn-off all of a sudden.   Such a beautiful, clear, and endless blue.   As I absentmindedly gaze at the transpicuous color that makes me feel like I can see through it, the blond-haired head that I’ve been hugging and pressing against my chest moves.   Alfred’s body temperature is as high as the kids, so even though my clothes are damp after rolling around the rain-soaked floor, I don’t feel cold. Rather, I feel warm.   Then noticing how Alfred isn’t moving, I suddenly realize that I’ve been hugging him tightly. Panicked, I loosen my grip.   I was so desperate that I pressed his head to my chest as hard as I could. Maybe… he couldn’t breathe and was choking.   I sling my arm over Alfred’s shoulder, but he doesn’t react at all.   What happened? Maybe he’s lacking oxygen and can’t even speak right now. I’m sorry, Alfred. I didn’t do that intentionally. It’s just that all I could think earlier was that I had to protect you. But now I end up suffocating you. Just what am I doing? How stupid.   Uneasy and wanting to check if he’s alright, I peek at Alfred in my arms, who is acting too obediently.   But… he doesn’t look like he’s suffocating at all. I bring my face a bit closer and strain my ears. The sound of his breathing is shallow, but I don’t think that he’s suffering from lack of oxygen.   His blue sky eyes are now a pale and gloomy color. Even though I’m looking at him from a very close distance, he doesn’t look up at me. On the contrary, I don’t even know where he’s looking.   Like the people around us, his heart seems to still be in the land of dreams somewhere. And judging from his expression, he hasn’t woken up from his dream.    “…Al?” I timidly call out.    His eyelids quiver, and his eyes return to its usual sky-blue color.   Alfred slowly raises his face and looks straight at me. He opens and closes his eyes several times before circling his arms around my waist.   …For some reason, his arms are trembling so much.   He’s hugging me so tight that it hurts. It feels so painful that I want to tell him to loosen his arms a bit, but his behavior reminds me of when the kids grow scared after listening to my scary story and cling to me desperately… So I just stay silent.   This doesn’t happen often. Most of the time, Alfred can remain calm and collected no matter what happens. Even if he’s surrounded by armed knights, he doesn’t panic. Not even a bit. He’s usually such an unruffled guy that’s not scared of anything, and yet—   “Al? What happe—”   “The white light… is…”   I swallow the words I’m about to say.   White light?   No way.   I start to panic and look around.   Even until now, everyone in this place still has that same absentminded expression, appearing to be lost in their thoughts.   No way…    Not only Alfred, but all of them too.   Did everyone also see it?    The white light She emitted.     We are still looking for a translator for this novel! if you are interested, please click here to apply!   <PREV     TOC      NEXT>

IWAL Ch 46 – Silence After the Feast Part 1 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/iwal/iwal-46-1/ https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/iwal/iwal-46-1/#comments Wed, 23 Feb 2022 19:16:58 +0000 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/?post_type=novel-tl&p=9232 “Krish-saaaan, let’s have lunch!” Couge and Genette helped me carry the plates of food, while Krish-san, who had just finished putting up the last net, jumped down from the tree. “As one would expect from a knight, the way you carry yourself is different from us ordinary people. When I was young I was pretty agile, but now that the years have caught up to me my body is heavy and hard to move,” Genette said admiringly. I nodded. Krish-san was cool, just like a ninja. His quiet nature was exactly like a ninja. “Shinobu, could you please roll out the cloth?” Norn asked. “Oh, yeah, wait a minute.” No, no, no. This was no time to be admiring Krish-san. Norn and I worked very hard on this lunch, so we had to eat it as soon as possible. As I spread out the cloth and laid out the food, the food looked even more delicious in the sun. To finish everything off, I squeezed a lemon on top of the fried chicken. Once everyone was present, we said, “Itadakimasu” and everyone started grabbing food. Couge seemed interested in the chakin sushi he had seen for the first time. He took one and immediately threw it into his mouth. “Whoa, it’s good. But what’s in this? I’ve never experienced this texture before.” “That’s rice. Didn’t you say you wanted to try it before?” I replied. “So this is it! I didn’t notice it because it looks totally different from what I imagined it would look like after hearing about it from Norn. What part of it looks like insect eggs? Isn’t it pretty?” That’s because it’s wrapped in a thin baked egg. I wondered if Couge would be surprised if he saw what’s inside? While Norn was trying hard to choose his words as he explained to Couge about the hidden rice, Genette took a huge bite of the fried chicken to the point where his cheeks were bulging. “The chicken is kind of refreshing,” Genette commented. “It’s got lemon squeezed on it. Isn’t it tasty?” I replied. We had washed our hands in the pond water earlier, but Krish-san was still working. So I prepared a warm towel for him so he could wash his hands, and I put some rice on a small plate for him to eat. “Okay, Krish-san. Eat a lot of food, okay?” “Thanks.” I wondered what Krish-san would eat first, and as I expected, he reached for the chakin sushi. “Delicious.” I couldn’t stop myself from smiling when I saw the corners of Krish-san’s mouth rise, even though it wasn’t as big of a smile as when he ate the kukri fruit. “Couge, please eat this too. I made it myself,” Norn said. “Wow, that looks good. I’ll try it.” Norn and Couge, who had just gotten engaged, were flirting with each other happily. The way that Couge’s eyes squinted in happiness was amazing. “… I wish I’d brought my wife along,” Genette-san mumbled. I saw Genette-san looking at his near-empty plate sadly, so I quickly grabbed food for him and served him seconds. As we were eating our meal, my family, who had been relaxing around the field, were lured in by the delicious smell and came over one after another. “I don’t see Pyonkichi… Oh, it’s because of his bad leg. I’ll be right back. I’m just going to carry him over here,” I said. It was very difficult for Pyonkichi to travel long distances. But it’s lonely to be alone in the shade, wasn’t it? “I’ll go with you,” Krish-san told me. Krish-san and I walked through the field together and we saw Pyonkichi laboriously crawling on the ground. He’s trying really hard, but he’s not making much progress. “Pyonkichi, you came all this way by yourself? You did a great job.” Pyonkichi’s ears perked up when he heard my voice. I squatted down and patted him on the back, and he looked up at me with his paws on my lap as if to say, “Take me with you.” He was begging me with puppy dog eyes. Pochi, who was following behind me, licked Pyonkichi. Maybe he’s saying, “I’m sorry for leaving you here.” These two animals were good friends. “I’m here to pick you up. Let’s go see the others together.” I put my hands under Pyonkichi’s armpits and lifted him up with a grunt. It’s heavy… When I held him up like this, he stretched from my shoulders to my knees. I wasn’t skilled at holding him and Pyonkichi seemed to be in a bit of pain. “Let me carry him,” Krish-san offered. From behind me, Krish-san lifted Pyonkichi. After passing over my head and into Krish-san’s arms, Pyonkichi placed his paws on Krish’s shoulders, his nose twitching. Read this at perpetualdaydreams.com “Good for you, Pyonkichi. I’m glad that Krish-san is holding you. Krish-san’s hugs make you feel safe and comfortable, don’t they?” I pet his back as Pyonkichi was having fun looking all over the place at this new height. I understood how nice it felt to be carried by Krish-san because he had also carried me around when I was injured. When I was with Couge, I was too scared to loosen my grip, but when Krish-san held me in his arms, I felt safe to leave my body in his hands. When Krish-san held me, it was nice to be able to look at things from a different perspective, as if my vision had expanded. “Oh, so Shinobu felt good when I held you.” “Huh?” I looked back at what I had said and had an “aha” moment. It’s true that it felt good to be held, but doesn’t that make me sound like a pervert?! What should I do? Would Krish-san think I was creepy and say, “This guy was thinking about that?” “Well, um, when I say it felt good, I don’t mean it in a weird way. I mean, the view was nice and fun and all that…!!” “Hahaha.” Oh no, this was bad. This was really bad. I just made up some stupid excuse while I was flustered and now Krish-san was laughing at me. It was the first time I saw him laugh in any other way than lifting the edge of his lips, and my mouth fell open. Could it be that Krish-san just teased me? “You laughed at me. You’re terrible, Krish-san!” “Haha, I’m sorry. Shinobu was so flustered, I just had to.” Krish-san brushed back my bangs with a quick motion, and with Pyonkichi still in his arms, he started walking lightly with a firm stride. Somehow, I felt the sweetness of Krish-san’s current gesture, and I stood there shocked still, grasping my bangs as they were pushed back. Every time I saw Krish’s various faces, I fell more and more in love with him. Since I had bocame aware that I was in love, the momentum accelerated day by day, and the pounding of my heart increased by 50%. I’d heard that there was a fixed number of heartbeats in a person’s lifetime, so I was probably going to die early. “What should I do, Pochi? What if I die before my time?” “Woof?” Pochi looked at me with his head tilted and then looked after Pyonkichi who was far ahead of us. Pochi grabbed my pants with his teeth and pulled me to chase after Pyonkichi. Now that the entire family was together, we resumed eating. I had made a huge amount of food, but everyone managed to cram it into their stomachs. The people of this world could really eat well. I made so much food that I thought I might have some leftovers, but most of the plates were empty. “Hey, Shinobu eat some more. You need to eat a lot or you’ll never grow,” Norn told me. “Thank you. But I’m already full.” Norn held out a french fry for me, but unfortunately I hadn’t grown, not even one millimeter, since I’d come to this world. Even if I ate until I was full to bursting I wouldn’t grow taller. Well, maybe I would grow… but horizontally instead. The amount of food I could eat was shockingly small when compared to that of the people in this world. When Krish-san had helped me eat while I was injured, he was really worried about how little I ate. Krish-san would say things like, “Don’t hold yourself back” and “If you want to get better you need to eat a little more” while holding out a spoon for me to eat. Krish-san took great pains to make the food, so even though it was impossible for me to consume everything, I forced myself to take it in until I felt sick. After that, Krish-san was able to understand how much I could take and he never asked me to eat more than I could handle. I was drinking orange juice, and Pochi was restlessly walking all over the blanket, his mouth salivating. I wanted to give him something to eat, but I didn’t want to give him something that had too strong of a taste. “Pochi, you can’t have the food I cooked, but you can eat the fruit. What would be good? As expected, you want to try the kukri fruit?” I placed a small amount of each fruit in front of Pochi for him to try. He sniffed them and took a bite of the apple. Pochi also ate the pear and peach, but he didn’t seem to like orange or the kukri fruit; when he sniffed them, he made a snorting noise. It seemed like Pochi also had his own tastes. “Do you think the other children will like it?” I asked. After trying out the various fruits with the animals, I found that the most popular fruit was the apple. Maybe the scent of the orange and the kukri was too strong. Since they were animals, their noses were great, so they probably weren’t good with strong smells. I gave Pyonkichi an apple cut into the shape of a rabbit. He made a cute crunching noise and quickly ate the whole thing. Norn, who liked Ravi in a different way from me, watched him eat with great joy as he said, “A Ravi is eating an apple in the shape of a Ravi. It’s so cute.” We listened to Genette-san’s tales of heroism from his youth, listened to Norn and Couge’s funny stories, sang, and chatted again. We were having a good time, but everyone was full and all the food we had cooked was gone, so we had to end our outdoor dinner party. Since the amount of fruit we picked today was too much for Krish-san and me to eat, we decided to have everyone who helped us take some home as souvenirs.   Translator: FrankenWife Part two coming soon. <PREV      TOC      NEXT>

NHAD Ch 37.4 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-37-4/ https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-37-4/#comments Sat, 29 Jan 2022 15:14:42 +0000 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/?p=9194   Translator: mii Editor(s): ASplashOfMusic, sleepchaser   Alfred jumps back diagonally from my words.   At the same time, the frost that was underneath him earlier suddenly expands and solidifies into an ice block. It runs up to his large sword, freezing it.   It’s a restrictive ice magic technique.   As long as the caster continues to chant the spell, the ice created by the technique will also continue to restrain the opponent.   Right after I notice the spell, the ice piles up at a tremendous speed, swallowing the large sword from the tip to the handle. It then expands, trying to capture not only the large sword but also Alfred’s feet.   When Alfred notices it, he hurriedly lets go of the sword and tries to dodge the ice magic, but he’s a second too late.   The ice swallows Alfred’s ankle, keeping him in place.   After the knights finish casting, they grip their swords and charge forward at the same time. Toward Alfred’s back.   Immediately after they’re within close proximity to Alfred, they swing their sword down his back, taking advantage of the fact that their opponent can’t move.   The ice shatters due to the force of the blow. Alfred’s body is thrown forward along with the ice fragments.   His body smashes against a square stone stand, upon which the statue of the saint is standing, before he bounces back and falls to the floor.   …Like a doll.   Looking at Alfred’s still body, I become frightened when I see blood.   No.   “Alfred!”   All at once, the other knights rush toward Alfred’s crumpled figure, thinking this is their chance to defeat him. Even though just a while ago, they were cowering away from him.   Ahh, what should I do? I have to help him quickly.   But what can I do now?   If this keeps going on, Alfred will—!   “…Ngh!”   Suddenly, I hear a multitude of footsteps from behind me. My body twitches in surprise.   Panicking, I look back, only to see Schwede and his group running toward us from the other end of the long hallway.   When I turn my head back again, I see guards running from the back of the corridor and flanking us on both sides. They’re also blocking the staircase that leads downstairs. Not to mention, the knights and monks are also coming up.   My escape route is gone.   …No. There’s still a way.   I grab the railing and plant a foot on it.   “Lian-dono?! P-please wait! What are you do—”   As if I’ll wait for you!   As I listen to Schwede’s unusually surprised and panick-stricken voice, overlaid with many other shouts and screams telling me to stop…    …With my hands and one foot supporting me, I lift my body over the railing and jump over.   Jumping at this height isn’t a problem for me. I haven’t survived my teacher’s survival training for nothing. Breaking my legs and dying here will bring shame to him.   As I fall, I cover my head with my arms and keep my body as small and round as possible.   The moment I touch the floor, I purposely roll my body to dampen the impact. After rolling several times, I stand up. My shoulders and arms hurt a bit from when I first collided with the floor, but this much isn’t a problem.   I sweep my gaze over my surroundings while I brush off the falling white feathers.   And I run.   “Al!”   Jumping off is a good decision. I’m the first to reach Alfred.   I lift him up and hug him, covering his head with my entire body as he kneels and staggers.   To prevent anyone from attacking him again. Read this at perpetualdaydreams.com Then I turn to the knights that are running toward us with their weapons and gather strength in the pit of my stomach. I don’t care if my throat breaks. I have to shout very loudly.   “Don’t come here!!! Stop!!!!!”   I don’t know if my loud voice surprised them, but the knights stop. Then they look at each other in confusion.   “Lian-dono,” says Schwede, above me.   I look up.   Schwede rests his hands on the railing and looks down at us with a shocked, troubled… and somewhat speechless look.   “Really. Jumping off like that… That was dangerous. Even I would be terrified to make that jump… You always do things that are outside my expectations,” he says, before taking a big, long sigh. And when his gaze meets mine, he stares for a while before smiling in relief.   But when he shifts his gaze to Alfred, his smile disappears in an instant, and his eyes narrow.   “…And Alfred-dono too. I have heard that those who receive the grace of God are born with various benefits, but… Looking at how much you favor him, the benefits he has received are truly frightening.”   Schwede turns his eyes back on me and exhales. “Lian-dono. We and the Goddess are just worried about you. Losing you is something we can’t bear at all… We want to keep you away from the disaster and protect you. That is our wish, our hope, and our feelings. That’s the only thing I want you to understand.”   “If you’re saying that… then it shouldn’t only be me. Other people, like the villagers, and…”   I hug Alfred to my chest.   “Him too. Can you please worry about them too if you think that my life is worth that much?! Marie taught me… that all of you extend your helping hands to those who seek salvation. So please. Help not just me but them too. Please extend your hands to them!”   “…Lian-dono.”   “Your Holy Scriptures state that all living creatures in this world are of equal value! My life and their lives are all just as valuable! And yet, you all only want to protect and save me… Isn’t that wrong?!” I exclaim. Then I shout toward the sky, “Goddess!!!”   Loud enough to hurt my throat.   Hoping my words will reach her.   “Are you listening, Goddess?!!! If you take me away like this… then I will have to live with the regret that I wasn’t able to protect anyone. I will live a life of self-deception. I don’t wish for that, and yet you’re telling me to do just that?! Didn’t you tell me before? That I can do whatever I want?! You said that I can guide him by following my heart, right?! And yet… you, the Goddess, are going against your word? Your promise?!!! Crotour!!!!!”   We are looking for a translator for this novel! if you are interested, please click here to apply!   <PREV     TOC      NEXT>

BMN Ch 10 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/bmn/bmn-10/ https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/bmn/bmn-10/#comments Sat, 22 Jan 2022 16:10:59 +0000 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/?post_type=novel-tl&p=9155 Ever since Fu Ming had participated in that gathering of scholars, his reputation gradually spread through the capital city. Compared to that of the past, which other people had dirtied intentionally or otherwise, his current one was far different. The people praising him now were the gentry of the capital, commenting on his wealth of talent, gentle nature, and handsome good looks. That he was worthy of their friendship. One day, after morning court had concluded, a colleague of Jin Yi called out to him, saying with a smile, “Your distinguished husband’s good name is all over the capital. Sir Jin is truly fortunate!” A faint smile was Jin Yi’s response; he did not say much, merely bidding his colleague farewell before turning to leave. However, a ripple propagated within his heart. Was this Young Master Fu, the topic of outsiders’ conversations, truly the same person in Fangman Courtyard? In fact, Fu Ming’s reputation had gradually spread to the boudoir as well: Even the old duchess and Renlan had caught wind of it. Some of Renlan’s close friends wanted to meet this Young Master Fu through her, but such a situation was too inconvenient in the end. They could only drop the subject with regret. Renlan informed her elder cousin of this, and even said in a joking fashion, “Brother Ming is so popular right now. Big Brother, hopefully you don’t fail to notice the treasure you hold!” This time, Jin Yi was between laughter and tears. He could only answer in an ambiguous manner. In no time at all, the sweltering June had already withered along with the lotuses. And bit by bit, the blistering July cooled. It was at this moment that the old duchess fell ill. Since Fu Ming was a man, he did not need to . With Renlan, Concubine Wang, and Xinyue present, it was unnecessary for him to stand guard there every day and take up space. But this time, he wasn’t idle. The old duchess entrusted Zhaoyan to him; in front of Jin Yi and the others, she requested Fu Ming in a very official fashion to educate and bring up Zhaoyan. Fu Ming was well aware that the old duchess had placed immense trust in him. To his surprise, Jin Yi did not object, and Renlan was even more in approval of this decision. Did this family, which had been testing him all this time without batting an eyelid, finally approve of him? No matter the state of Fu Ming and his husband’s relationship, at the very least, the fact that he would educate the Jin family’s legitimate great-grandson solidified his position in the household without a doubt. Fu Ming held the deep impression that it was a heavy responsibility, but he did not decline the old duchess’ request. For he needed such a responsibility, and not to mention, he enjoyed being around Zhaoyan. Ever since then, Zhaoyan stayed longer at Fangman Courtyard, and Fu Ming paid more attention to and grew more strict with his education regarding his words, actions, bearing, and character. Although Fu Ming was stricter than before, Zhaoyan was a bright child. He knew that this change was for his own good. Sometimes, Zhaoyan would throw a temper tantrum. While Fu Ming would criticize him, later on he would patiently analyze the situation bit by bit for Zhaoyan to hear and treat him like a logical adult. In such a way, he won him over, as Zhaoyan could not help but to be.  Regarding the activities they used to do—reading books, tending to flowers and plants, and playing games—Fu Ming would still entertain Zhaoyan. Thus, Zhaoyan grew more trusting of and closer to him. And because of his son, Jin Yi visited Fangman Courtyard more frequently than before, sometimes having a meal there. Zhaoyan sat in between his parents at the dining table. From time to time, they would pick up some food and place it into his bowl, urging him to eat more. The first time the three of them ever shared a meal together, Zhaoyan ate for a while before suddenly setting down his chopsticks. Looked to the left then to the right, both eyes gradually growing moist. “What’s wrong? Did you eat something too spicy?” asked Fu Ming in a gentle tone, wiping away his tears with a handkerchief. Zhaoyan shook his head. Sucked in his snot. Then he said in a soft voice, “Yan’er isn’t sad. Yan’er i-is too happy.” Although his elders had always treated him well, and the old duchess even more so cherished watching him grow up, ever since he lost his mother when he was younger, Zhaoyan held regret in his heart. Today, this regret seemed to be strangely compensated. His still soft, immature, and peerlessly sensitive heart grew bitter and tender to the max. just a little, and he could not help but weep. Fu Ming was the first to react. He stroked Zhaoyan’s head and didn’t say much, merely picking up a piece of steamed fish the child liked to eat and removing the bones with care. Following that, he dipped the meat into some sauce and placed it into Zhaoyan’s bowl. Perhaps it’s because Fun Ming had lost his parents in his youth that he could understand Zhaoyan’s perspective and feelings. At that moment, he recalled that it wasn’t just himself who could; Jin Yi was the same as well. When it came to the lack of familial love, there was no difference between them. Since he had to carry this regret for the rest of his life, why not help the young’un by his side have a better life? Perhaps Jin Yi was of the same thought. Thus, every one to two days, he would come to Fangman Courtyard and share the evening meal with Fu Ming and Zhaoyan. And since the cooks there were more talented than the ones at his own courtyard, his appetite improved. Read this at perpetualdaydreams.com At present, it was troubled times. The grew terribly busy; even the typically idle martial officials would leave their homes early and return home late. Jin Yi returned to his estate later than he had done so in the past. Despite this, Zhaoyan was willing to wait for his father so that they could share the evening meal together. Because of this, Fu Ming had the cooks stew a of soup in the afternoon every day. After Zhaoyan drank it, he wouldn’t be waiting for his father on an empty stomach. When the old duchess, while still ill, heard of this matter from Xinyue, she nodded in satisfaction. “Despite being a man, he is still considerate.” A smile graced Xinyue’s lips. “Old Duchess has always had a good eye on people.” The old duchess patted Xinyue’s hand. Sighed.  “You are also a good child. It’s just that is too stubborn and can’t be persuaded. You have been wronged.” Xinyue shook her head. “To be able to remain in the Jin estate is already this slave’s greatest fortune. Since the previous mistress of the house trusted me, she had me watch over the lord. In fact, this slave knows that the previous mistress worried about me, and also worried about the young master. This slave doesn’t need any status or position, and is perfectly content just being able to stay in the Jin estate, watch as Young Master grows up, and live up to the previous mistress’ hopes.” A few coughs spilled from the old duchess’ lips. Yet, she still revealed a smile. “If you’l are able to understand the situation, then you’ll be able to accept things better. Don’t worry. Changjie isn’t someone who’s devoid of sense. The Jin estate will not treat you unfairly.” To which Xinyue nodded, massaging the old duchess’ back, asking her what she preferred to eat today in a gentle voice… Meanwhile, at Fangman Courtyard, Jin Yi forced himself alert despite his exhaustion and played chess with Zhaoyan. Said child had recently learned how to play chess from Fu Ming. The moment he grew familiar with the game and rules, he wanted to swap pointers with his father, full of zest. Jin Yi was no expert at chess, but compared to a novice child, he was still at a higher level. In a flash, Zhaoyan suffered defeat. Unhappy, Zhaoyan threw away the chess pieces. “No more playing. I rather play chess with Uncle Ming!” At least Fu Ming would teach him one step at a time and go easy on him. But Jin Yi said with an indifferent expression, “You were the one who challenged me, so you must be able to take a loss in case you do lose. How is being flustered and exasperated anything like the elegant demeanor of a man?” After hearing those words, Zhaoyan grew even angrier yet his confidence dropped. In the end, he didn’t say anything. Fu Ming made his way over to them. Drawing Zhaoyan to him in a half hug, he said, “Yan’er should first follow the wet nurse to rest. It’s very late now. If you still don’t go to sleep, then you won’t be able to wake up tomorrow. When you are taking a bath, think about what happened today and think it through. Tomorrow we will discuss it together, alright?” Zhaoyan nodded. Once he bid them farewell, the wet nurse promptly stepped forward and left with him. To Fu Ming’s surprise, Jin Yi did not appear to intend to leave at all. Fu Ming did not send him off either. He simply steeped a cup of calming tea and placed it to the side of his seat on the table. “Do you mind if I play a song?” “Help yourself,” said Jin Yi, shaking his head. Fu Ming walked over to another table, his zither lying upon it. Took a seat. Lufei stepped forward and burned some incense, which was made from fruit trees and fresh flowers, in a censer. The sweet scent overflowed. Like the babbling of water came the sound of the zither’s strings. It transformed into a stream of spring water, flowing from a gorge, and a red maple leaf floated along the current over slippery mountain rocks… The flow of the water grew more and more gentle, and the stream seemed to arrive at a forest. With the moonlight in harmony, a few birds sang and splashed in the water, the breeze lightly dispersing the lingering sound… Unknowingly, Jin Yi succumbed to slumber. Upon rousing, he found Fu Ming still playing music. However, it was a different song now, somewhat lighthearted and cheerful, waking him from the land of dreams. Once Fu Ming grew aware that Jin Yi had awoken, he stopped playing the zither. “The night is cold. My Lord should return and rest.” “What was the first song you played?” asked Jin Yi. A light smile graced Fu Ming’s lips. “It’s just something I improvised. Clearly it isn’t good as My Lord fell asleep after hearing it.” But Jin Yi shook his head. “It’s a good song. If you think of a good name for it, let me know.” Fu Ming nodded. Rarely did Jin Yi talk much. But he continued, “Then I’ll leave first. You should also rest early.” “Alright. Take care, My Lord.” Fu Ming returned inside and said to Lufei, “Bring out two red lanterns. Have two people escort the lord back, one in front and one at the back.” Originally, Jin Yi wanted to say that the moonlight was bright enough to illuminate the road. That lanterns were unnecessary. But all of a sudden, he did not want to brush off Fu Ming’s good intention, and permitted it without comment. On departure, Jin Yi even accepted a few incense cakes from Fangman Courtyard. They were the same kind as the ones burned while Fu Ming had played the zither. They did not smell like ones he had experienced in the past. Clearly, they weren’t something from the...

NHAD Ch 37.3 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-37-3/ https://perpetualdaydreams.com/novel/nhad/nhad-37-3/#comments Sat, 22 Jan 2022 14:44:33 +0000 https://perpetualdaydreams.com/?p=9152   Translator: mii Editor(s): ASplashOfMusic, sleepchaser   As I run, I can see white and gray smoke drifting from the end of the hallway.   Just what is happening?   I jump out of the hallway.   The entrance, which looks like a large hall, grows closer and larger in my field of view.   I’m standing on a hallway that circles around the outer periphery of the wall and is one floor above the ground. Covering one side of the hallway are wooden railings.   I run to the railing in front of me and look down.   “Huh…?!”   The entrance is in a completely different state compared to when I first came.   The walls are burnt, the floors are destroyed in some places, the pillars are cracked, and the windows are broken.   A lot of areas are on fire, which is what caused the smoke. The wind and the rain are blowing in through the windows. Some of the saint portraits lined up on the left and right side of the walls near the entrance have also been partially damaged.   The entrance, which used to be beautiful and like a museum or art gallery, has been destroyed. Just seeing the state of ruin makes me understand that something terrible must have happened here.   Near the center of the destroyed entrance, many people are fighting.   As far as I can see, there are around six knights, around eight guards armed with a spear, and around four monks clad in hoods.   With weapons in their hands, they all have an awfully tense expression as they confront what seems to be the assailant. Some of them look frightened and hesitant to make a move. Their faces look like they’re facing a madman.   All of their eyes are focused on one spot. On a man they have surrounded at a safely far distance.   On a young man draped in a black jacket and holding a large sword that’s almost as tall as he is in one hand.   His hair is of the color gold, and his eyes are blue, which are unusual in this area.   “Alfred!”   I lean over the railing and call out his name. Alfred starts to look around, surprise apparent in his expression.   When I call his name again with a loud voice, he finally figures my location and turns around, looking straight at me.   The moment he catches sight of me, he widens his eyes. Then he scrunches his eyebrows, and his face distorts. He looks like he’s going to cry anytime soon, which is unusual.   “Lian… Finally… I finally found you…”   Alfred loosens his grip. The tip of his large sword hits the floor, making a small clunking noise.   Even though I’m quite far away from him, it’s apparent that he’s drenched. His black jacket is also scorched and contains many tears. He looks tattered overall. Moving my gaze to his temple, I finally notice something red flowing down from his temple… I tremble. I shift my gaze downward and scrutinize his left arm. It’s somewhat dark red too.   Is he injured? There’s blood on him.   Ahh, I have to heal him immediately—   …It’s shameful, but I’m too shaken and upset by his injury and bloody state. I can only stand still in a fluster.   Alfred walks towards me, his footsteps light.   “Al, you’re hurt—”   “When I came back, Cheddar-san’s wife told me that you collapsed from illness due to an epidemic. I heard that they brought you here… Then, when I came here to meet you, those guys told me they can’t let me do that. Even if I just want to see you for a glance, even after I begged, they told me to go home…”   I swallow down my quivering breaths. So he heard it.    The lies that bastard spewed out.   He was definitely very surprised when he heard that story. He must’ve noticed it immediately too.   That I was lying.   When he asked me about my schedule before, I only replied, “Nothing special going on.”   Even when he’s departing, I send him off with a wave as usual, wishing him a safe trip.    I…   “Alfred, I… I’m sorry! Sorry… I didn’t say anything to you…”    “…They told me… you would never come back to the village…”   “No! They’re all Schwede’s lies! I’m not sick at all! Look, I’m really healthy!”   “Really…?”   “Yeah! You can tell just by looking at me, right?”   Alfred smiles in relief, looking like he doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry.   “Actually, I should be more concerned about you. Why are you in this state?! What’s going on here?” I exclaim.   This place looks exactly like a battleground on the front-lines.   Read this at perpetualdaydreams.com   “It’s these guys… they tried to chase me away by force. I told them I wouldn’t go home until I met you, and the guards began to hit me. So I hit them back, and they hit me back too. They even pulled out their swords, so I did the same. Then the number of people attacking me kept increasing for some reason… Since they attacked me fully armed, I didn’t hold back. I still didn’t understand the situation, but I just decided to give anyone who’s targeting me a beating.”   What?   I press a hand against my forehead. My head hurts.   Right. He may have grown up lately, but… he used to be a rough brat who starts fights left and right.   Basically… he’ll accept every quarrel people start on him, retaliating against anyone who hits him. In a sense, it’s not an exaggeration to call him aggressive. He doesn’t give mercy to anyone who attacks him. What a glittering blonde guy.   Ahh, really…    Just as I’m about to scold him, I swallow my words and take a breath.   Because out of the corner of my eyes, I see a knight, who’s standing a short distance from Alfred, chanting with his palm on the blade of his sword.   The knight next to him is also chanting in the same posture.   Upon seeing that, I recognize what the knights are trying to do in an instant.   The knights’ movements are very similar to what Teacher Granza did when he casted a magic technique that created a shock wave with his sword.   No good. It seems that just like my teacher, these knights aren’t only specialized in swords but also in magic.   I also notice several monks standing behind the knights, hiding behind the pillars. The moment my eyes land on the short cross-like staff in their hands, my heart pounds.   The beating of my heart echoes in my ears, and my hands that are holding the handrails are damp with cold sweat.   The monks, whose hems are slightly scorched, keep chanting as they grip their staffs.   With the tips of their staffs aimed at Alfred.   The knights and the monks exchange glances, signaling something with their eyes. Then they nod at the same time.   Then, I see white frost slowly begin to spread across the floor, centering on Alfred’s feet.   That’s—   “Al! Move away! Quick!”   <PREV     TOC      NEXT>
